Area Info

Sandy Neck Beach, a barrier beach on the Sandy Neck peninsula, projects into the Atlantic Ocean from the town of Barnstable and shelters the Great Salt Marsh and Barnstable Harbor. Ending at Sandy Neck Light, this beach stretches for six miles of smooth sand, rolling dunes, clear water, and drastic tides. The dunes are home to several endangered species, such as toads, turtles, and other wildlife. This endangered area is comprised of freshwater wetlands, a salt marsh, and has been recognized by the state of Massachusetts as an area of critical environmental concern. Additionally, the many private historical cottages and the Sandy Neck Lighthouse render this area a part of Barnstable’s historical district. The cottages were originally built for fishing, hunting, and as sites for Barnstable’s salt works during the 1700’s on land acquired by the Sachems, a Native American tribe, about 20 years before.
